## Why feldspathic veneers are the esthetic standard
Layered feldspathic porcelain veneers have been the highest-esthetic veneer option in dentistry for decades. They're not the fastest restoration to make and they're not the cheapest — but for the cases where the result has to look like a natural tooth in every light, in every photograph, in every conversation, **nothing else matches the optical properties of hand-layered feldspathic porcelain**.
The reason comes down to how the restoration is built. A feldspathic veneer is constructed one layer at a time on a refractory die, with separate powders for dentin, enamel, mamelons, halo, and incisal effects. Each layer is fired in the porcelain oven, then more layers are added, then it's fired again. The technician controls translucency, value, chroma, and surface texture by hand at every stage.
Production-line labs rarely offer this work — it's too labor-intensive and not scalable. **It's a perfect fit for a hand-craft, owner-operated lab like Northwest Dental Studio.**
## When to choose feldspathic veneers
Send us feldspathic cases when:
- The shade match has to be perfect against an adjacent natural tooth (the toughest case in cosmetic dentistry — a single central or lateral)
- The patient has translucent natural enamel that pressed ceramics can't replicate
- Multi-unit anterior smile design where you need character and depth, not flat monolithic crowns
- Minimal-prep or no-prep cases where translucency matters more than strength
- Peg laterals or diastema closures requiring delicate buildups
- Patients (or dentists) who have asked specifically for "hand-layered" or "feldspathic" work
For posterior cases or heavy-bite anterior cases, pressed [e.max veneers](/services/cosmetic-and-veneers/) are usually the right call.
## How the case moves through the lab
1. **Records visit (recommended for multi-unit cases).** Impressions, intraoral photos, shade documentation.
2. **Diagnostic wax-up.** Hand-waxed on a mounted study model to plan tooth proportions and incisal edge position.
3. **Mock-up in the mouth.** Putty matrix from the wax-up, tried in over unprepped teeth so the patient (and you) can approve the design.
4. **Prep visit.** Using the approved design as your guide.
5. **Lab work.** Refractory die fabricated, then porcelain layered, fired, layered again, fired again — building the optical effects one layer at a time.
6. **Try-in (optional).** For high-stakes anterior cases we can stop at try-in for a verification visit.
7. **Final delivery.** With case notes on layering choices so you know what you're seating.
## What we need from you
- PVS impression with full margin capture (no torn flash, no bubbles at the margin)
- Opposing arch impression and centric bite registration
- Intraoral photos at multiple angles — full smile, retracted, lateral views
- Shade — VITA tab held at the level of the prep tooth, plus photos with the tab in frame
- For multi-unit cases: ideal incisal edge position and any patient preferences on tooth proportion
If we're missing what we need to nail the case, the owner will call you before starting work.
## Turnaround
Single feldspathic veneer: **10–14 working days.** Multi-unit anterior cases: **14–21 working days** depending on try-in steps. Rush turnaround is possible — call to discuss.
## Feldspathic veneer FAQs
What are layered feldspathic veneers?
Feldspathic veneers are made from feldspathic dental porcelain hand-layered directly onto a refractory die (or platinum foil). The technique uses multiple layers of porcelain — dentin, enamel, effect powders — fired sequentially to build natural translucency, character, and depth. They are widely regarded as the highest-esthetic veneer option available.
How are feldspathic veneers different from pressed e.max veneers?
Pressed e.max veneers (lithium disilicate) are pressed from a single ingot and then stained or partially layered — strong, predictable, and fast to fabricate. Layered feldspathic veneers are built up one layer at a time by hand. Feldspathic veneers have superior optical properties — incisal translucency, internal effects, natural light scattering — at the cost of being more labor-intensive and slightly less strong than e.max. For maximum esthetics on anterior cases, feldspathic still wins.
How thin can a feldspathic veneer be?
Feldspathic veneers can be fabricated extremely thin — 0.3 to 0.5 mm is routine, and minimal-prep or no-prep cases are possible when occlusion and case planning support it.
What kind of cases are good candidates?
Anterior cosmetic cases where esthetics is the priority — peg laterals, single-tooth shade matches against natural dentition, multi-unit smile design, diastema closures, and minimal-prep esthetic work. Patients with healthy enamel and reasonable bite dynamics.
How long do feldspathic veneers take?
Standard turnaround for a single feldspathic veneer is 10 to 14 working days. Multi-unit anterior cases run longer depending on try-in steps. Tell us the seat date when you send the case and we'll confirm a realistic delivery date.
What do you need from me to start?
PVS impression with clean margins, opposing arch impression, centric bite registration, intraoral photos at multiple angles, and shade information (VITA tab plus photos). For multi-unit smile-design cases, we recommend a records visit first so we can produce a diagnostic wax-up before prep.
